Radon Testing Options
There are three primary types of radon tests used for homes and office testing.
1) Charcoal Test Canisters/Bags: A passive test device that does not require
electrical current to operate. They are generally used for Short Term testing (approx.
48 hours). At the end of the test period, the kits are mailed to a regional
radon laboratory for analysis.
2) Continuous Test Monitor - An active
test device that takes hourly radon readings (over 48 hours) and stores them in memory
for printing later. The benefit of using a continuous monitor is that it gives immediate
results at the end of the test versus charcoal canisters and bags that must be mailed
off for analysis. Continuous Test Monitors must be re-calibrated on a yearly basis
at their respective manufacturer.
3) Alpha Track Detectors - Because
radon levels can vary somewhat from day to day, a longer term test (up to 90 days),
will provide a better indication of the yearly average of radon in a home because
they reflect a wider sampling of test data.
